Learn how to do it right first (books, courses, coaching) and then go out and try it for yourself. That is what I think is the most effective way to learn how to play poker for pretty much everyone. It's daft because you wouldn't start to try and programme a computer with looking for help from somewhere. The more who don't try and read about it the better for me in a selfish sort of way. I have a local friend who I've been playing with side by side for the last 3 years and he was basically self-taught. He never read poker books and meanwhile I was reading as many as I could. I guess it comes down to how you learn best, but I prefer using all the resources available. I'm sure many self-taught players would've learned the game faster if they would have read books, played and got coaching etc :) I know what you mean. I've always shyed away from reading too much about poker but now I'm on a mission to get all the help I can. Some players do have natural talent and are self taught but I think the only way to learn the game is to either read about it or play a damned lot of hands!
