I agree, as for learning to tie my shoes, I learned it by someone showing me how it is done first and then doing it myself.

Learn how to do it right first (books, courses, coaching) and then go out and try it for yourself. That is what I think is the most effective way to learn how to play poker for pretty much everyone.

it is good to have an on and off field approach to poker learning not everything can be taught in books. Did you learn to tie your shoe lace from a book or by just doing it........

I think people have a fear of not wanting to follow the crowd and believe the poker books will somehow sully their game and make them think like everybody else.

It's daft because you wouldn't start to try and programme a computer with looking for help from somewhere.

The more who don't try and read about it the better for me in a selfish sort of way.

I know what you mean. I have a local friend who I've been playing with side by side for the last 3 years and he was basically self-taught.

He never read poker books and meanwhile I was reading as many as I could. I guess it comes down to how you learn best, but I prefer using all the resources available.

I'm sure many self-taught players would've learned the game faster if they would have read books, played and got coaching etc :)

I'm just starting my poker career and a lot of what you say makes sense. I've always shyed away from reading too much about poker but now I'm on a mission to get all the help I can.

Some players do have natural talent and are self taught but I think the only way to learn the game is to either read about it or play a damned lot of hands!
